ANDROIDS DON'T HAVE FREE WILL... THIS ONE WANTS TO BREAK FREE

After being discharged from a psychiatric hospital, fifteen-year-old Abel Middleton is introduced to Caden, a custom-designed android programmed to serve the Middleton family and provide emotional support to Abel.

Despite his difficulty trusting others and having lived alone with his older brother for years, Abel begins to form a bond with Caden. As time goes on, however, more and more androids worldwide are developing free will and defying their software. With android laws becoming stricter, Caden’s existence is plagued with fear of persecution.

As he watches his fellow androids being massacred from the sidelines, Caden must either live in hiding bound by programming—or break free, which could mean capture and destruction at the hands of his creators. Will he remain in servitude or risk everything to help his people?

What To Serve advocates for

To Serve puts forward characters who are underrepresented in literature. Characters with disabilities, illness, and identities that don’t fit the status quo are the ones running the story in the novel. They are complex individuals with struggles that can be recognized in the real world as the struggle for socioeconomic equality is still well alive for groups who aren’t in a position of power. It recognizes the imbalance and gives those respective readers the recognition they deserve.

Praise & Reviews

“An android rails against the limitations placed on his kind. One of the first things Caden learns is that he’s not human… Abel and Caden must carefully navigate their tenuous situation in order to avoid being discovered and separated.” — Kirkus Reviews
